Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202306h00, 08 June 2023, modified at 06h00, 08 June 2023

In this last episode of the special series of the podcast "Au cœur de l'Histoire" devoted to Sartre and Beauvoir, historian Virginie Girod traces the end of life of the most famous intellectual couple of the twentieth century. In 1963, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were at the heart of a meeting of intellectuals in Leningrad, in the USSR. Sartre is 58 years old and at the height of his fame. In November 1964, the Nobel Academy consecrated his talent and his work by awarding him the Nobel Prize for Literature... which he refuses. On the political field, he is committed against the war of Viet Nam. In the late 1960s, Sartre and Beauvoir were the darlings of the media. The couple fascinates. Simone de Beauvoir became a feminist icon and distinguished herself by defending women's rights. She stresses the importance of work as a factor of emancipation, and is committed to the fight of feminist associations in favor of abortion. Jean-Paul Sartre died in 1980, Simone de Beauvoir in 1986, leaving their philosophical, intellectual and feminist mark on the world.
