Pope Francis will be admitted today to the Gemelli hospital in Rome to undergo an operation for risk of intestinal obstruction and will have to be hospitalized for several days, the Vatican announced.

The 86-year-old pontiff will undergo emergency surgery under general anesthesia this afternoon. The operation is "necessary" because of the worsening of the pope's symptoms, according to his medical team, the director of the Holy See press office, Matteo Bruni, said in a statement.
