During the past hours, social media users in Sudan launched a distress call to save the residents of the island of "Tuti" due to a "siege" imposed by the Rapid Support Forces, which led to a shortage of food and medicine and threatens a humanitarian disaster, according to their description.

Through the hashtag "#فك_حصار_جزيرة_توتي", tweeters, activists and Sudanese conveyed the testimonies of the island's residents about the current situation, and stressed the seriousness of the situation, demanding income to save the people, especially in light of the frequent news about the scarcity of food or the absence of some of them due to the blockade imposed on it.

According to the testimony of a resident of Tutti Island, after a week of total closure imposed by the RSF, the situation has become catastrophic, with shops completely empty of essential goods.

"Tutti is all devoid of flour of all kinds, so bakeries have stopped working," the citizen said in his testimony, noting that many shops now lack basic materials such as oil, flour, salt, sugar and yeast.

Alarm

Due to the blockade, testimonies from the island's residents indicate that most shops have been forced to close and the alarm is sounded due to the lack of medicines at the only functioning health centre in Tuti.

Several sources described the situation as "catastrophic and dangerous" and a number of them confirmed that "Tuti", who is loved by the Sudanese between the jaws of death, and prays to God to save her family.

Since the conflict erupted on April 15 between the army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, more than 1800,1 people have been killed and more than 5.<> million displaced and refugees.

"Durrat El Nil" is the Sudanese favorite name for "Tuti", the largest of the Nile islands in Sudan, which is located at the confluence of the white and blue Niles (Muqrin Al-Niles).

This green island is a tourist destination par excellence where the Nile, the sun and the sand of the beach, which is why its people call it "Dorat Al-Nile" while others call it "the bride of the Nile".

Throughout history, Tuti has retained its cultural and social heritage through its privileged location, located between the main cities (Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North) and connected to the capital by a bridge to the Corinthia Hotel, which was built with Libyan support.

Its 20,<> residents and visitors previously used to go to the beautiful island by ferry.

In 2015, the United Nations Development Programme for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDP) named Tutti Island among the top 8 regions in the world for using traditional skills and local culture to reduce flood risk.

"Tuti" continued to resist the flood of the Nile through the solidarity and determination of her people in traditional ways, immortalized by Sudanese art in its songs by confronting its men and youth with the rebellious river at times of flood.
