The National Police arrested last Sunday one of the two individuals who had just assaulted and robbed an 80-year-old woman in an underpass on Villavaliente Street, next to Paseo de Extremadura, in the Madrid neighborhood of Batán. The arrested is a 39-year-old Dominican man with 28 police records. After his capture and already in the police station, he tried to snatch the weapon from one of the agents, as confirmed yesterday by the Superior Police Headquarters of Madrid.

The woman victim of the robbery suffered a possible fracture in the hip when she was dragged and pushed to the ground by the thieves. She was treated by the Samur and transferred to the Jiménez Díaz Foundation Hospital.

The detainee faces an alleged crime of robbery with violence, a crime of injury and a crime of attack against the agents of the authority. The police are now trying to arrest the other involved and investigate whether both are involved in the wave of robberies that have occurred in the underpasses during the last days of April and the month of May.

This would be the first arrested for these misdeeds that provoked a special device by the Latina police station of the National Police with plainclothes agents and foot patrols around the underpasses.

This latest robbery occurred last Sunday afternoon. The woman got off a bus at number 224 of the Paseo de Extremadura to go home. It was 16.15 p.m. and I was alone. When he headed down Villavaliente Street and very close to one of the passages, two very corpulent men blocked his way. One of them tried to grab her purse. The woman resisted the robbery and started screaming.

One of the robbers pushed her to the ground and beat her, snatching her belongings. The two criminals fled into the neighborhood of Batán.

One of the patrol cars that is part of the security device began to chase the two thieves. Realizing they were being followed, both criminals fled in the opposite direction. One of them started throwing credit cards and paperwork in the woman's purse to the ground. He managed to escape, according to police sources. The other thief was arrested by one of the officers who was on foot. At the time of the arrest he threw under a car the mobile phone of the 80-year-old woman assaulted.

The arrested man was taken to the National Police station in the district of Latina in a very altered state. While he was being taken to the cells, with his hands shackled, he tried to snatch the weapon from one of the agents who guarded him. He did not succeed and was reduced again by the police. Today it will go to court.

Since the beginning of May, at least eight women have been victims of assaults near passages and underpasses in the Batán neighborhood, in the district of Aluche. Most people were older than 60.

In at least three other robberies, the victims ended up hospitalized as happened this past Sunday. A 45-year-old woman ended up admitted to the Gómez Ulla with multiple injuries and a traumatic brain injury after suffering a violent robbery on May 11 in the subway of Sanchorreja Street in Batán. Also Friday, May 5, a 75-year-old woman was walking at noon through the underpass of Villavaliente Street with Cebreros when she was pushed by a young man with a dark complexion while climbing the stairs in the direction of the old health center of Cebreros. The woman fell to the ground and suffered several bruises. The offender snatched her purse and ran away.

Another 80-year-old woman was injured at the end of April when she suffered a robbery with violence at number 289 of the Paseo de Extremadura in the Batán neighborhood. The perpetrator of the robbery was a young man who snatched her purse. In the assault he assaulted the woman who suffered injuries to a lip. The victim ended up falling to the ground and suffered a broken shoulder. She was transferred by an ambulance of the Samur Civil Protection to the Jiménez Díaz Foundation Hospital.
