The grocery stores are under pressure from customers and this has had an effect. For the second month in a row, Swedish food prices fell, according to the independent food price app Matpriskollen. Prices decreased most in the product groups fruit and berries, dairy products and cheese.

– It brakes faster than I had actually thought, says Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen.

One change is that consumers strive to be as cost-effective as possible in a different way than before. You shop at extra prices and visit several stores to find the cheapest prices. This has had an effect according to Matpriskollen's monthly report.

"For the first time, I think people have actually gone out in unison and said 'we don't like higher prices, so we're actually starting to change stores'. There has been a lot more looking at discount stores. The pricing of the products is being questioned.

The food giants were pressured by politics

The fact that the finance minister last spring urged food giants to lower prices to curb inflation has also affected prices, Ulf Mazur believes:

"Politics helped, at least it got Lidl moving, which was the fastest to cut prices at the beginning of April. It is clear that it is a pressing factor.

But how much is a 0.1 percent decrease in the stores? A lot, says Ulf Mazur, because it is a figure of the total increases and decreases. Many goods have decreased in price by significantly more than 0.1 percent.

Every third item decreased in price

"Out of 43,000 items, 16 percent went up in price, 31 percent went down in price and about 50 percent remains at the same level.

The foods that increased most in price during the month of May were ice cream, meat and pantry items such as powdered soup. According to Ulf Mazar, consumers should be prepared for certain goods to continue to rise in price.

– Keep comparing and taking advantage of the extra prices available in the store. Keep this pressure on the trade," he said.
