France: the price of parenthood always paid in the long run by women

On the occasion of Mother's Day, this Sunday, June 4, the Women's Foundation published a note from its Observatory of Women's Economic Empowerment on its work on factors of wealth inequality between women and men and the cost of parenthood. If there is no precise figure, the authors, experts in women's rights, recall that the price of parenthood is paid by mothers above all, accentuating the risk of precariousness.

What is the cost of being a mother? This is the question that experts from the Observatory of Women's Economic Emancipation and the Women's Foundation have tried to answer. Admittedly, there is no precise figure, but according to the authors of the study on this issue, the observation is clear: from pregnancy to retirement, women always pay the heaviest price of parenthood within heterosexual couples.

When there is a failure of childcare, it is women who find themselves on the front line. For example, in 2022, 160,000 families did not have a childcare solution for their children, neither in a crèche nor with a childminder.

This situation leads many women to put their professional activity on hold. In one out of two cases, women risk becoming poorer by reducing their working hours.

Another lesson of the study is that being a mother increases the risk of precariousness for women, whether they are in a relationship or single.

Women pay a high price for motherhood in the long run.
