Where to begin? Perhaps from the night of 21 March 2022, when Adama Traoré stopped Vinicius Jr.'s start, his Blaugrana teammate, Eric Garcia, cheered encouragingly: "Well done, Adama"(1). It's normal, isn't it?! What wasn't normal was what Garcia did right afterwards.
The Spanish defender turned to Vinicius, and made a few more words, this time with the aim of ridiculing and reprimanding rather than encouraging: "As for you, I will give you the Balloon of the Role next season, Balloon Dor will be yours, okay?" (2). Of course, this is not the first time, and it will not be the last, that someone has manipulated the nerves of his opponent on the field, but Garcia's ridicule of the idea of Vinicius winning the Ballon d'Or, as if it were an impossible dream in Spain, goes beyond mere verbal skirmishes to seriously wonder what obstacle prevents the Brazilian from the award? Why can't his name, along with Haaland and Mbappe, be among the favourites? Does it lack skill, or perhaps effectiveness, or is there something else that we don't pay enough attention to despite its extreme clarity?
Bigger than just Eric Garcia
Vinicius' face did not show signs of anger after that reprimand, not because he had a superior ability to control his emotions, on the contrary, it is very easy to drain him in this kind of battle. The idea is that Eric's sarcasm wasn't the worst thing he experienced in Spain, and it is nothing to compare with other incidents of bullying, violence and moral assassination faced by the Brazilian winger.
You may think that the term "moral assassination" is an exaggeration, but Jonathan Leo, the famous editor of the Guardian, went further, writing that this season Vinicius Jr. is subjected to a kind of "real chase".[3] Does not know "Leo" when became hostility to "Vinicius" in this way, what he knows is that some of the Mallorca audience targeted him with the sounds of monkeys, before repeating part of the Osasuna fans of the matter, who were not satisfied with the enormity of the act, took advantage of the minute of silence on the victims of the earthquake of Turkey and Syria to practice racism rudely unparalleled, that was after supporters of Atletico Madrid hung a black doll wearing a junior shirt on a gallows near the headquarters of the Merengue training (4).
By the way, this was not the only time that part of the Atleti audience used such methods, during the same season thousands of them were involved in a racism scandal, which you may not imagine taking place in a European country. That was when they sang the text: "Vinicius, you monkey", outside the walls of the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, and ahead of the capital derby in September 2022(5). The mere singing in that image was not enough to heal one of them, so he decided to climb on the shoulder of his colleague, while a smile on his face, holding in his hand a monkey doll (6). You may be asking yourself now: What did security do about this farce?! The answer is that he organized the entry of all these people to the runway, to continue the bout of insults and racist bullying.

What the supporters of Atléti committed was no exception, especially when you put it alongside the disgraceful behavior of some Real Valladolid fans, when they took advantage of the passage of "Vinicius" by their stand, and the sounds of monkeys resounded. Meanwhile, the Merengue was scoring his second goal that ended the match, so the Brazilian, who dares to insult directly, celebrated as if to avenge himself, and once he finished celebrating, bananas had been thrown at him from the stands(7). You see, what was he feeling at that moment?!
That's the question asked by Joe Brennan, editor of Fourfourtwo, after our owner faced the same gruesome harassment at the Camp Nou stadium last March. This was not the first, not the second, not even the third, but the eighth time this season. It was thought that Real Madrid had played 12 away league games, eight of which Vinicius had been subjected to this level of hostility.8
Unfortunately, they are no longer eight, after the chants that kept resounding from the stands of Valencia in the most famous incident recently, and their owners succeeded, not only to distract Vinicius, but also to break his pride, after he failed to hold back his tears, and was about to leave the Mestalla stadium, and perhaps the whole of Spain. It was in that sad scene that Joe Brennan's question was answered.
Amid this toxic climate, Eric Garcia's rebuke seems to be a drop in a pitch sea, especially when it comes from a player of mediocre form, who does not guarantee a starting position in his team, let alone in the first place by controlling the name of the winner of the Balloon d'Or. The problem is that someone more influential than Eric Garcia turns a blind eye to this hell that Junior is living in Spain, and even gets involved in it himself.
A joke called "La Liga"
LaLiga had to take a more deterrent course if it really wanted to confront racism, but only to pass on these shameful facts to the Spanish federation and to the prosecutor. (Shutterstock)
Do you know someone named "Piera Bouar"? He is the executive director of the organization "Fare", which aims to combat discrimination in European football, and was asked by the news network "CNN" what Spanish officials are doing about what "Vinicius" is facing, and he replied decisively: they are trying to wash their hands of these atrocities.9
Bouar may have meant to refer to the condoniority of the Madrid prosecutor to what happened outside the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, as the man saw in everything that the racist Atléti fans had done except to use "disrespectful" chants for a few seconds, just before a match characterized by a high level of rivalry and intensity.10 "Vinicius, monkey" is just a disrespectful chant?! What about using a black monkey doll with the name of a human being ?! If that's what a highly competitive football will produce, let that competitive ball go to hell.

As strange as the Madrid prosecutor's justification is, his counterpart at Barcelona has already come up with something even stranger. This was after the investigation into racist abuse at the Camp Nou stadium was closed in October 2021, citing the inability to identify those who resemble "Vinicius" to monkeys(11). This argument provoked Esteban Ibarra, president of the Spanish anti-intolerance movement, to the point of stating that the archiving of racist events in Catalonia had been incredibly flawed.12 The whole thing is unbelievable, how can those in charge of a stadium with all these capabilities and technical and security characteristics fail to do so? We're talking about the Camp Nou, which is exceptional even by European standards, not a five-a-side stadium rented on weekends.
The Mallorca prosecutor found no escape after what the media company "DAZN" did, publishing through its accounts clips documenting racist insults to "Junior". That was irrefutable evidence that prompted him to launch the investigation, before Spain's National Sports Court issued a ruling fining a single fan 4,13 euros and banning him from stadiums for a year. One fan?! Actually?! Well, that's fine, maybe it's an example for those who get away with it. We looked a little for the court's ruling, before we were shocked to find that the sentence had not come into effect at that writing, and that nothing might change in the future.[<>] We wanted to make sure that racism was defeated, even in the form of an orphan punishment, but it seemed unbeatable.
There is no fundamental difference between mocking an opponent's skin colour and ridiculing a penalty kick, for example, as long as both serve the purpose of distracting and destroying their resolve. This is the natural consequence of the absence of punishment and deterrence.
Think about it a bit: what if LaLiga officials had approved a real sporting penalty against convicted Camp Nou fans two years ago? What if the prosecutor does not hesitate to bring the racists to justice? Would we have seen those scenes that are incomprehensible today? Would thousands of people in the South Stand chant non-stop: "monkey, monkey, monkey, etc" before, after and during the match, and then return home safely as if they had committed no offense?!
The funny thing is that the LaLiga management hands out a booklet to every fan before the start of the season, urging them to show good values and avoid others. He also handed over another booklet to each player to encourage him to respect everyone and report any racist incident he witnesses.14 Did LaLiga officials think such a booklet would prevent Atletico Madrid's ultras from hanging a gallows for Vinicius? Or maybe the copies ran out before Valencia arrived?! What about the racists from the Valladolid audience?! Do you see them not able to read in Spanish, so they did not understand what was in the booklet?! LaLiga had to take a more deterrent course if it really wanted to confront racism, but only passed these shameful facts to the Spanish federation and the prosecutor, and it was completely shaken off after it did its part to the fullest in distributing the booklets.
Why doesn't Roberto Carlos shut up?
The catastrophe is that all these racist incidents are neither new, nor invented by a new generation of the Spanish public, but they are doing what their predecessors did years ago. The ways may have differed, but the essence of the discrimination still lies in these acts, and it is still the helplessness that amounts to complicity and cover-up that victims gain from the LaLiga administration and Spanish officials, which makes their position even more shameful.
It certainly didn't start with Vinicius, you must know what happened to Dani Alves, as well as what happened to Neymar and Marcelo, and above all these was the scene of Samuel Eto'o leaving the pitch after what Real Zaragoza's supporters did, but do you have an idea of what happened in 2004 inside the Spanish national team camp?
In one of the training sessions, old coach Luis Aragones addressed young talent José Antonio Reis: "I want you to prove to that black that you are better than him. Don't back down, you have to prove it to him, prove it for me, I want you to believe that you are better than this lion".15 Take a deep breath and try to guess the name of the player Aragones. Are you done? It's Thierry Henry, the Premier League's top scorer, and one of the best players in the world at this time. The Spaniards nicknamed "Aragones" the wise man of Hortaleza, and they designed a statue for him after his death. Just imagine that this is the behavior of a man who is wise and well-behaved, let alone others?!
Coach Luis Aragones and Jose Antonio Reyes. (Getty Images)
Aragones, sorry, the "wise man", was not subjected to any criminal accountability, he only had to pay 3,16 euros in the amount of the fine approved by the Spanish Federation. When that news reached Henry, he described it as very absurd, so how can this ridiculous punishment be the sufficient punishment for those who utter it? Do the Spanish authorities want to stop racism with such provisions? Anger mixed with confusion appeared clear in the statements of "Thierry", and this anger must have multiplied after his Spanish colleague "Manuel Almunia" objected to the idea of imposing punishment in the first place, no matter how meager or symbolic, as he did not see in what appeared from "Aragones" any problem, and here is precisely the problem (<>).
Several months later, Aragones stood at the Santiago Bernabéu, with tens of thousands of Spanish fans behind him making monkey noises whenever the ball reached Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell and Sean Wright Phillips. It was a friendly, so the England players didn't understand what was going on around them, what motivated all that hatred. Cole accused the Spanish coach of starting all this, especially after Aragones refused to condemn these racist acts, but was looking angrily at Ashley (17). As for his colleague "Phillips", waited for the punishment that the guilty deserve, and as soon as he knew that it was limited to a fine of 45 thousand euros borne by the Spanish Federation, he mocked saying that it was like a nice slap at the hands of a criminal (18).
That same shock was felt on Roberto Carlos' face during his first Clásico at Camp Nou in 1997. He was followed by the sounds of monkeys, and surrounded by signs resembling chimpanzees and macaques around the stadium, before he discovered that one of them had decided to deface his car, so he scratched the word "monkey" (19). Carlos had moved to the Merengue from Inter Milan, where racism is not absent in Italy, but he did not experience this level of intensity, especially without any personal enmity between him and the Catalan public. This prompted him to go out to the media and point out that brutal attack, which everyone colludes to keep silent about.
Roberto Carlos. (Getty Images)
In fact, not everyone was silent, but the response came from one of the Barcelona players saying that this man, meaning "Carlos", speaks too much, he does not know anything, and he has not yet adapted to that atmosphere, he has to stop talking and not crack our heads until he gets used to all that. Do you know the name of that player? Prepare for that surprise, it is "Pep Guardiola", the man who pays lip service to human rights, equality and democracy, and hangs that yellow armband on his top of his chest in solidarity with political prisoners, he abounded on "Roberto Carlos" just complaining (20).
If Almonia doesn't see a problem, and if Guardiola blames the victim, what is the definition of racist behaviour for Spaniards? Isn't all these insults, similes and ridicule of human color and appearance enough?! When, then, does one become a victim of ethnic discrimination?! When he is killed, his body is burned and his children are abused, for example?!
Never forget in 1997 Roberto Carlos tried to speak out after being racially abused at Camp Nou.
Pep Guardiola responded to the media by saying "He shouldn’t be talking"

No one thought about the fact that he was eighteen years old, playing in the junior games the day before yesterday, and then being thrown by Real Madrid without prelude in the LaLiga and Champions League rounds today. Everyone suddenly forgot that little Vinicius was playing because Hazard was injured all the time, because Asensio had stepped back after all the exaggerations that accompanied his start, and the 18-year-old had to bear all the burden alone. The doubts turned into bouts of ridicule, some of which came from the Real Madrid fans themselves, who were rushing Kylian Mbappe to take his place.
Our owner was not appreciated and respected from the beginning, which is radically different from the situation of Mbappe, who was treated as a national asset within France, and then the player around whom Paris Saint-Germain builds his project. Nor is Haaland, who was released by the media as a superhuman, who never stops tearing opponents' nets, and it is impossible to stop or obstruct him. Therefore, if the French striker is touched, or the nails of the media try to harass "Erling", the management and fans of Paris and City clubs will turn the tables on everyone, not to mention of course that one of them hangs the gallows, or hits and suffocates the other visibly a statement inside the stadium, and then is expelled from the referee.
For these reasons, Vinicius seems to be behind in the Ballon d'Or race, despite his brilliance in tougher and fiercer competitions than Mbappe's, and despite his individual impact with Real Madrid surpassing Haaland with City. Have you heard of a single player who faced such hostility from the country and society in which he resides, and at all levels: official, media, and fans, and then competed for that award? Did Messi, Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Mbappe or De Bruyne come under such deadly pressure? When we asked Khaled Ahmed Youssef about our friend's fortunes in the Balloon Door, he fell silent for a while, then uttered one word: "difficult", before continuing: "Maybe he is thinking of leaving Spain."
Does Vinicius change history?
Vinicius did not think about leaving because of the Balloon d'Or, but because of that farce that happened in the Valencia match and exposed Spanish football to the whole world. As much as the horrors he endured, before he even set foot on the pitch of the Mestalla, and even received a red card for trying to evade the opponent's hand as it wrapped around his neck, it could be the game that changed the tide.
Our guest paused for a long time in front of the cover of the newspaper Marca last week, where she chose the headline: Not only are you not racist, you must be against racism. Khaled told us, "I think it's the first time the press has adopted such a discourse. The term 'antirracista', or anti-racism, is not common in Spain, and when used by a newspaper like Marca, it means a real transformation, because it expresses an official voice and orientation." This shift is clearly evident when compared to the games that the press tried to circumvent once the match was over, with reporters telling Ancelotti that the fans did not chant the word "Mono", "monkey", but "Tonto", meaning stupid/silly. Here the Italian coach exploded in their faces, saying that the referee stopped the match because of a racist violation, is "Tonto" considered a racist chant in your country?! You have a real problem, and it has to end, otherwise I will withdraw with my team from the pitch if it happens again.35
Khaled Ahmed Youssef did not ignore that point, saying that the referee's decision to stop the match, for that particular reason, is in itself a shift, because it is not repeated often in Spanish stadiums, and even that this law did not exist 10 years ago from today. This shift did not end with the press or the referee, but included the Spanish Federation, and even the executive branch itself, as the federation announced a partial closure of the Mestalla South Stadium, from which most of the racist obscenities were issued, for 5 matches, in addition to a fine of 45,36 euros (7). This came in parallel with a statement by Puma, which sponsors La Liga and the Valencia team, condemning what happened. What about the executive? On the twenty-third of May, the Spanish police announced the arrest of 37 people as a result of committing hate crimes against "Vinicius"(<>). Our guest commented on that news: "The executive branch arrests racist fans? I don't remember seeing anything like that in Spain before."
When we came to mind what Vinicius wrote on Twitter after the game, Khaled smiled again. Are we on a date with a new surprise? Yes, but he had to praise Vinicius in his first words: "Vinicius' reaction was courageous, as was ingenuity. He chose bold words, made clear and unequivocal reference to racism in Spain, and emphasized his words with evidence in the form of passages documenting what he was subjected to. Vinicius seems to have learned from the experiences of his predecessors, and has come to the necessity of confrontation, using the tools at his disposal. I want to stress that this response is a bombshell against a segment of the Spanish public that is used to being covered up for their actions, and that Vinicius has even entered a space that is afraid to be approached by politicians and leftist elites."
The reaction of the young Brazilian prompted his compatriots to sympathize with him, not only at the popular level, but also included the President of the Republic of Brazil himself, "Lula da Silva"(38), and his government decided to dim the lights directed at the statue of Christ in the capital, Rio de Janeiro, to make the most important landmarks of Latin America sad and desperate about what is happening in Spain (39). Thus, Vinicius' battle with racism went beyond football, and sports in general, and crossed other barriers, or as Moha Greiho, the Spanish writer and journalist, argues, that this international pressure created by the young player may push the Spanish government, institutions and civil organizations, to move in the right direction (40).
Throughout those previous months, racism seemed to punch after punch Vinicius' face. He was bleeding alone without a protective shield, receiving only whispers that sometimes regretted his condition, and sometimes blamed him for his anger. Now the verse has been reversed, he sits in the main booth of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, next to Florentino Pérez personally, receiving the greeting of attending the Rayo Vallecano match, watching his teammates wearing a shirt bearing his name, while the Merengue fans hold giant banners with the words of solidarity and support. Vinicius Jr. has put Spanish racism in the corner of the ring and prepares to deliver Muhammad Ali's knockout. Will the young man succeed in changing history?
