It is in the Drôme, a few kilometers from Valence, that the project "My bottle is called come back" has installed its washing unit. Here, returnable glass bottles are collected, washed and packaged and sent back to local producers. "Compared to glass recycling, the deposit for reuse represents 79% less greenhouse gas emissions," explains Clémence Richeux, in charge of development.

The project coordinator calls for a return of the monetary deposit in France. That is, consumers pay a few cents more on purchase, which they would recover by bringing the containers back to the store. "And only for reuse," she says, because there is no question of mixing everything with recycling.

Everything has to be reinvented

So, in the fall of 2022, "Ma bouteille s'appelle reviens" joined forces with nine other organizations specializing in the collection and washing of bottles, such as Consign'Up, Alpes Consigne or Rebooteille, to create France Consigne. The idea is to harmonize practices to accelerate the return of reuse in France.

Because the system has to be completely rebuilt. "We have completely lost the habit of re-employment in France, whereas we did it 30 years ago," explains Clémence Richeux. Today, everything has to be reinvented. We have to recreate all the technical processes, all the standards around quality and especially bottle standards." Eventually, the association could issue certification to producers in a reuse process.
