China News Agency reporter Sun Quan

On the roof of a high-rise building in the Taiwan Farmers Business Park in Xishan, Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, there is a "sky farm". In summer, small vegetable gardens, gardening landscapes, and ecological walls of flowers decorate this roof. "You see, vegetable melons, cabbage, onions, and radishes are growing gratifyingly." The owner of the farm, Li Xuewen, shuttled through it, like several family treasures.

Li Xuewen from Taiwan is a new urban farmer who has been farming in the mainland for ten years. Working and living in Wuxi for many years, he has created the Yangtze River Delta urban agriculture industry brand "Mantiannongyu", and has set up columns on social platforms, chatting with "fans" from time to time about the story of his brand founding in the mainland.

In 2013, Li Xuewen, who had just come to Singapore to inspect urban agriculture, was invited to Wuxi by a friend. "The transportation here is convenient, and it only takes one or two hours to go to the core cities of the Yangtze River Delta such as Shanghai and Nanjing; This is also the land of fish and rice, with a good climate and environment. After thinking about it, I decided to test the waters of urban agriculture here. Thinking about the choice of that year, Li Xuewen bluntly said that "it has come to the right place."

That's ten years. Li Xuewen observed that in the past ten years, mainland urban residents have pursued more joys in life, such as appreciating their own flowers and eating their own vegetables. "In Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing and other cities, more and more people like to plant flowers, plants, vegetables and fruits on their balconies and yards." Li Xuewen seized the opportunity to launch potted vegetables, balcony farming and roof renovation projects to develop urban agriculture business.

"The concept of farming now is different from the past." Li Xuewen explained that urban agriculture puts forward high requirements for the professional knowledge and personal qualities of practitioners. New farmers are not "facing the loess with their backs to the sky", they need to innovate in management concepts, planting techniques, marketing methods and other aspects. Taiwan has characteristics in the development of exquisite agriculture and the mainland has spatial potential in the consumer market, and he has combined the two to make his own characteristics.

Li Xuewen said that now that his industry has taken root in Wuxi and "blossomed" in the Yangtze River Delta city cluster, he plans to invite more experts in the field of exquisite agriculture and young people from Taiwan to visit the mainland in the future to investigate the development of urban agriculture in the mainland. "The rural revitalization strategy promoted by the mainland is also a new opportunity for the vast number of Taiwan youth." (End)
