War in Ukraine: African peace mission expected in Kiev and Sochi next week?

Two weeks ago, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that an African peace mission between Ukraine and Russia would soon be led by six heads of state from the continent. At the origin of this mission project, there is the Brazzaville Foundation, created in 2015 by the Frenchman Jean-Yves Ollivier. The mission could take place next week.

After having recently travelled to Russia and Ukraine, the latter announced on Tuesday 30 May that the mission should visit Kiev and Sochi next week, although doubts still remain about this timetable. The French businessman is starting today to tour the African capitals concerned by this African peace mission in Ukraine. The objective is to prepare the mission and especially to refine the schedule.

Jean-Yves Ollivier landed this morning in Cairo where he is due to meet with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattha al-Sisi, and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema have an imperative on June 8: a summit of Comesa, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, is indeed scheduled for that day in Lusaka.

« A much deeper dialogue »

Initially announced in the middle of next week, the mission could finally move to Kiev and then to Sochi around June 10 and 11. Despite his scheduling concerns, for the president of the Brazzaville Foundation, there is little doubt today that the mission will take place.

«

It is a peace mission that should, we hope, open the door to a much deeper dialogue than on the points on which we will first discuss and try to reach agreements. We start a process," explains Jean-Yves Ollivier.

What are these points on which you are trying to reach agreement? "These are humanitarian points: exchanges of prisoners of war, exchanges of prisoners outside prisoners of war, the problem of children, the problem of grain and the problem of fertilizers," continues the president of the Brazzaville Foundation.

I am delighted to announce that the peace mission of African heads of state will soon be held in Kyiv (Ukraine) at the invitation of President Zelensky, and then in Sochi (Russia) at the invitation of President Putin. More information ⤵️ https://t.co/nrzXmbOU4r
