Chad: clashes between the army and FNDJT rebels in Tibesti

A new outbreak of violence in Tibesti province, in the far north of the country, nearly a year after intercommunal violence that left more than 100 dead in Kouri Bougoudi and four after the war against CCMSR rebels in the same area. New clashes opposed Wednesday, in this area, the Chadian army to the rebels of the FNDJT, the Front of the Nation for Democracy and Justice. And everyone is going their own way, without any independent source to confirm or deny for the moment.

According to the deputy coordinator of the FNDJT rebels, it was the Chadian army that opened hostilities by launching an attack on one of its forward bases in Dozo, a locality located some 80 km from the town of Wour in Tibesti province.

Youssouf Tolli assures that their fighters managed to repel this "surprise attack, (...) conducted with the complicity of informants well introduced in the area", without giving an assessment of these clashes for the moment.

On the side of the transitional government, its spokesman confirmed Thursday that a clash had taken place Wednesday, in the sector of Kouri Bougoudi, between the army and "the rebels of the FNDJT and the CCMSR", the Military Command Council for the Salvation of the Republic.

Aziz Mahamat Saleh assures that "one rebel was killed, 20 others including four wounded captured, heavily armed vehicles seized and others destroyed" during fighting that lasted several hours and engaged following "an incursion from southern Libya".

Deadly violence in southern Chad, massive influx of refugees on the border with Sudan in the east, terrorist threats in the southwest and west and new outbreak of violence in the north, clouds are gathering over Chad, the government spokesman acknowledged, but that he is ready to face them.
