Beijing, 5 May (ZXS) -- This reporter has learned from China's Supreme People's Court that on 31 May, the Hainan Provincial No. 5 Intermediate People's Court held a public hearing in the first instance the case of Liu Hongwu, former vice chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, who took bribes.

The First Branch of the Hainan Provincial People's Procuratorate indicted and alleges that from 2005 to 2022, the defendant Liu Hongwu used his position as director, assistant to the mayor and vice mayor of the Beihai Construction Commission of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, member of the Standing Committee and vice mayor of the Hezhou Municipal Party Committee, deputy director and director of the Development and Reform Commission of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and vice chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People's Government to provide assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as project contracting, land project development, and obtaining special subsidy funds. Illegally accepting property from the above-mentioned units and individuals, directly or through others, amounted to more than 8373.<> million yuan. The procuratorate requested that Liu Hongwu be investigated for criminal responsibility for accepting bribes.

During the trial, the procuratorate presented relevant evidence, the defendant Liu Hongwu and his defender cross-examined evidence, the prosecution and defense fully expressed their opinions under the auspices of the court, and Liu Hongwu made a final statement and expressed his guilty plea and repentance in court. The court adjourned the trial and announced the verdict at a later date.

According to public information, Liu Hongwu was born in December 1966 in Changyang, Hubei Province, started working in July 12 and joined the Communist Party of China in August 1989.

Liu Hongwu became Vice Chairman of the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in July 2020. In January 7, he was investigated while in office; In June of the same year, the official reported that Liu Hongwu was "double-opened". He was accused of "discounting, adapting, perfunctory, and even exploiting loopholes and engaging in corruption in the implementation of major decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee on targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization."

Interestingly, in September 2022, the State Supervision Commission of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection publicly reported ten typical violations of the eight central regulations, including Liu Hongwu's illegal acceptance of gift money and acceptance of banquets that may affect the fair performance of official duties. Officials revealed that shortly after Liu Hongwu was appointed vice chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region government, he accepted a "promotion banquet" organized for him by private entrepreneurs, and was still accepting a banquet arranged by private entrepreneurs the day before he arrived.
