Former Republican Vice President Mike Pence plans to announce his bid for the White House next week as a challenger to Donald Trump.

The 63-year-old Pence will campaign on June 7 at a rally in Iowa; a Midwestern state that traditionally opens the race for the Republican presidential nomination, US media said.

Trump, 76, already announced in November that he would run in those elections and is the favorite to win the Republican nomination.

Another contender is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is also expected to run in June.

Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor and Trump's first ambassador to the UN, is also running for the Republican nomination, alongside South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.

After years of loyalty to Trump, Pence walked away when a mob of Trump supporters stormed Congress on Jan. 6, 2021. That day Pence ignored Trump's claim to frustrate the session in which Congress was to validate the electoral victory of Democrat Joe Biden.

An evangelical Christian and opponent of abortion, Pence has been touring many of the states considered most important in the race for the Republican nomination for months.
