It was two weeks ago that Alf Svensson and Hungarian President Viktor Orbán were both at the congress of the international Christian Democratic organization CDI in Slovenia.

"I grabbed his arm and said that now you have to decide so we get a yes to NATO. I said they have no motive not to.

How did he react to that?

"It wasn't strange. It is important to have a sense of how a person is and be able to meet them on the same level. We have met many times before and it goes without saying that I say what I think and so does he. It would not have been honourable if I did not bring it up.

Not treated Hungary 'honestly'

Of 30 NATO member states, 28 have approved Sweden's NATO application, all except Turkey and Hungary.

Svensson says he believes the Hungarian president's answer was honest, but he was not given an explanation as to why Sweden's application had not yet been approved. But Svensson says he didn't need one.

"He probably thinks that Sweden has not treated Hungary in an honest way. When it comes to this type of leader, you shouldn't think you'll get anywhere if you make them feel belittled.
