Since 2022, through traffic via Kungsgatan in Uppsala has been suspended. Now the opposition wants to restore traffic regulation on the grounds that the rule has been counterproductive and because it has a negative impact on business in the inner city.

"It's a big disadvantage for mobility, but a very small benefit for the climate," explains Nora Karlsson, second vice chair of the Street and Community Environment Committee.

Creates congestion elsewhere

The opposition believes that traffic on Kungsgatan has not stopped, as a result of the rule. Instead, it has moved and created congestion on other roads

– We introduced it to deal with air pollution and congestion, and we see it as the most effective measure, says Linda Eskilsson, municipal commissioner and chairman of the cultural committee Uppsala.

Road users on Kungsgatan have mixed opinions about the rule, both positive and negative. At the same time, the rule has not been noticed by everyone on the street and the sign that is supposed to draw attention to this has been interpreted as difficult to understand.
