Ciudadanos endures in Madrid like the boxer who is about to kiss the canvas. After the debacle of Begoña Villacís in the capital, where she only got 2.89% of the votes, and that of Aruca Gómez in the region, with 2.24% of the electorate in her favor, only 11 municipalities have achieved an orange representation.

A sort of galias among which El Molar stands out. There Citizens got this past 28-M three councilors, with 20.61% of the total votes. At the head of this project continues Yolanda Sanz, mayor since 2015. "When they asked me why I kept performing with Cs I always said the same: I'm from Atleti, and I've been when I've been in the Second Division and when I've played the Champions League," Sanz tells this newspaper, who is experiencing a "bittersweet feeling".

On the one hand he feels pride for what has been achieved, but also sorrow for the fall of "a very good project for Spain". "Something has been done wrong to get to this situation... a situation that has affected us locally." Sanz thinks that, if the Ciudadanos brand had not deteriorated so much, they would have managed to get "more councilors". Both them and "other towns in Madrid where there was a lot of talent".

In the elections of 2015, as well as in those of 2019, the orange team of El Molar reached four councilors, reaching an agreement with the PSOE to form a Government. Now, a new alliance with the Socialists and with the independent party MARMED would keep them in the Mayor's Office with seven councilors compared to the six of the sum of PP (five councilors) and Vox (one). But Sanz avoids making cabals and calculations. "We are respecting the PP, which has been the most voted list. They must be the ones who initiate the round of contacts they deem appropriate to strengthen their government, at the moment they need to have two more to have a stable majority that allows them to reach the end of the legislature. We are not thinking, at the moment, of pacts."

'Complicated decisions'

Ciudadanos could also be the key to the Mayor's Office in Guadalix de la Sierra, despite having achieved 9.96% of the votes and a single councilor: Alexis Isidro Ortega. The PSOE, the most voted candidacy, harvested six councilors, the same as the PP and Vox block. So, predictably, it will be Ortega who decides who to give the next four years of mandate.

"I feel that the votes have not corresponded to the work, project and team we have. Now it's time to make complicated decisions, but we will always make them thinking about what is best and fairest for Guadalix," Ortega said.

They will have fewer headaches in municipalities such as Orusco de Tajuña or Villamantilla. In both, Cs has achieved two councilors, with 21.14% and 19.34% of the votes respectively, although in both localities their presence will be testimonial before the absolute majorities of PSOE, in the first, and PP in the second.

And in the rest of the towns where they have achieved representation, the future will not be more promising. In Robregordo, where they have obtained a councilor, it will be the only opposition, a space that during these four years belonged to the PP since the majority is socialist, with its two elected. In Santa María de la Alameda and Torrelaguna they have collected only one mayor, so the picture will be very similar.

Complete the list of municipalities with orange spectrum Pinilla del Valle, with a mayor of five, being the remaining four of the PSOE; Fresno de Torote, where they will also be mere props with a councilor and 10.59% of the ballots due to the absolute majority of the PP; and Gascones, also with one, where they have lived an identical situation to the previous municipality.

In the face of this 28-M, Ciudadanos, in the region, was presented in a total of 62 municipalities, 51 less than the local elections of 2019 where they appeared in 113 candidacies. Its results have left the oranges without their nine mayorships and without the ten vice mayoralties or mayoral tenures that they have had in the last four years.
