The Ukrainian military confirmed that it repelled a Russian attack on various regions of the country in which long-range cruise missiles and dozens of drones were used, and said that Russia targeted military facilities and important infrastructure with its attacks.

Ukraine's air force said on Monday it had shot down 29 of the 35 drones and 37 of the 40 cruise missiles launched by Russia overnight.

The military administration in Kiev reported that Russian forces launched an attack with squadrons of booby-trapped Shahid drones and cruise missiles from strategic bombers over the Caspian Sea.

The administration added in a statement that "the attack on the capital was from different directions. Ukrainian air defense units shot down more than 40 air targets."

Sirens sounded after air strikes across Ukraine after midnight on Monday, which lasted until five in the morning.

No damage

Officials said there was no significant damage or casualties in Kiev while Russia's 15th air strike on the city since the beginning of May and the second overnight in a row and with the same intensity.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said on Telegram that "another difficult night for the capital."

Russian authorities have yet to comment on these attacks.

Ukrainian authorities announced yesterday that they had repelled the largest drone attack targeting Kiev since the war began, and that they had dropped most of them over the capital, which was preparing to commemorate its founding more than 15 centuries ago.

Ukraine revealed the reasons for the intensification of the "drone war" with Russia, and spokeswoman for the Southern Ukrainian Operations Command Natalia Humenyuk said that the Russians' intensification of the use of drones in attacks was due to supply problems in their missile arsenal.

Mutual attacks

Other areas of eastern Ukraine have seen-for-tat attacks between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Alexander Tarnavsky, commander of Ukraine's Tavria operations, which includes the Kherson, Zabarozhia, Avdiivka and Marinka regions, said Ukrainian forces had targeted an entire company of Russian troops.

In Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, the governor of the Ukrainian province reported that one civilian was killed and others wounded in Russian shelling targeting areas controlled by Ukrainian forces.

For its part, the Ukrainian army said that Russian forces launched 3 missile strikes on military and civilian sites, in addition to 13 raids on the eastern city of Kramatorsk.

Pro-Russian authorities said Ukrainian shelling targeted civilian areas and residential buildings in Donetsk.

Attacks inside Russia

In the southern Russian territory of Krasnodar, authorities announced the neutralization of drones that tried to approach an oil facility, stressing that the infrastructure of the facility was not damaged and the refinery was subjected to similar attacks this month without causing injuries, according to Russian authorities.

In a later development, Russia's Belgorod governor said the province was at actual war and called for Kharkiv to be annexed to stop Ukrainian bombing.

On Monday, the Belgorod region was the scene of the largest armed incursion from Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022, in an infiltration accompanied by shelling and drone fire.

Russian territory has also been targeted in recent weeks by a series of drone attacks, as Kiev talks about preparing a counteroffensive aimed at retaking Russian-held territory, including Crimea.
