In the race for the presidency in Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is using all the tricks: the Turkish president is standing on a street in Istanbul with a handful of banknotes.

Unimaginable for a German politician: Erdogan patronizingly pulls out one 200 lira note after another from his trouser pocket. This attracts a lot of people. The bills are worth the equivalent of a little less than ten euros. At the moment, you don't get too much for it in Turkey.

He has just cast his vote at a polling station. In Turkey, the second round of the presidential election began on Sunday morning. The incumbent is running in a run-off election against his challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

Today's run-off election is considered to be trend-setting. Since the introduction of a presidential system in 2018, Erdogan has had more power than ever before. Critics fear that the country, which has a population of around 85 million, could slide completely into autocracy if he wins again. In the first round of elections on May 14, Erdogan did much better than pollsters had expected.
