Senegal: Government vows firmness against any attempt to unrest public order

Official reaction after the statements of Ousmane Sonko Wednesday evening, from Ziguinchor in the south of the country. The opponent says he wants to "march on Dakar" at the head of a popular convoy.

The convoy announced by Ousmane Sonko, called "caravan for freedom", did not leave Ziguinchor on Thursday evening. The opponent had said that he would take the road "at the latest" Friday through Bignona, Sedhiou, or Kolda.

People have the right to protest in Senegal ", assures Minister Abdou Karim Fofana, but "we must respect the laws and regulations", adds the government spokesman. "Following this trial, Ousmane Sonko may prefer to lure us into a trap and try to get arrested for political issues, issues of disturbance to public order to avoid the infamy of being arrested for sordid stories. Whatever the cost, public order will be maintained and we will not let anyone disturb the tranquility of the Senegalese.

Ousmane Sonko has several times denounced "abuses" by the security forces during demonstrations. One of his lawyers, Frenchman Juan Branco, threatened to take international legal action. Sidiki Kaba, Minister of the Armed Forces and former President of the Assembly of ICC Member States, denounces "manipulation": "The crimes targeted by the International Criminal Court, if we know them, are excessive. It is a disregard for the principle of the Court, it is a desire to demobilize the forces of order. But other types of arguments are going to be needed.

Is a special security device planned in the coming days in the country? "All options will be taken so that the peace of the Senegalese and the protection of their property are ensured," the minister replied.

Accused of rape, Ousmane Sonko risks ineligibility for the presidential election scheduled for February 2024. The judgement in his trial is due on 1 June. A new judicial appointment that raises fears of tensions.
