Imran Khan can no longer leave Pakistan for the time being. The government has imposed a travel ban on the former head of government. But it affects not only him, but also his wife Bushra Bibi and hundreds of his party members. This was announced by two border control officials to the dpa news agency, and the Al-Jazeera broadcaster also reports on it. The decision comes a few weeks after the temporary arrest of the popular opposition leader, which sparked nationwide riots.

On May 9, Khan was taken away by a court in Islamabad to great fanfare. His supporters then stormed several military buildings. The politician was finally released on bail by order of the Supreme Court. A re-arrest of the former cricket star is not ruled out.

Several supporters now have to answer to military courts, which human rights organizations have criticized. Numerous politicians announced their resignation from Khan's PTI party after the riots, and thousands of supporters were arrested. Government officials are also considering a ban on the PTI.

Overthrown by vote of no confidence

Khan had repeatedly accused generals of being involved in a conspiracy against him since his removal as prime minister. During his tenure from 2018 to 2022, Khan also imposed travel bans on several opposition politicians.

Since he was overthrown by a vote of no confidence, the judiciary has repeatedly accused him of corruption, money laundering and insulting a judge. Observers see political reasons for this. The 70-year-old hopes for a political comeback in view of the parliamentary elections in autumn.
