A man has unleashed panic in a town of Nagano (central Japan) after causing the death of one person and wounding three others, including two policemen, after attacking them armed with a weapon similar to ahunting rifle and a knife. The subject has barricaded himself in a building, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred shortly before 16:30 local time (10:30 GMT) on Thursday, when police received an emergency call notifying the alleged stabbing of a woman.

When police responded to the scene, the suspect opened fire with a weapon similar to a hunting rifle, and after injuring two officers and another man, fled and barricaded himself in a building. The two police officers are in serious condition, state broadcaster NHK reported.

Local authorities said that the alleged perpetrator of the incident was dressed in camouflage clothing and wore sunglasses and mask, and warned that he continues to hide in the building that has been surrounded by police.

Police have asked residents in the area to stay in their homes because of the risk of more gunfire.
