Jiangxi Hukou, 5 May (ZXS) -- Visiting the Yangtze River Poyang Lake Aquatic Biological Protection Base: Biodiversity and Beauty and Harmony

China News Agency reporter Jiang Tao

5 May marks the 22th International Day for Biological Diversity. Walking into the Aquatic Biological Protection Base in Hukou County, Jiangxi Province, at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, there was an endless stream of students who participated in the activities, as well as parents and tourists who came to visit with their children.

In the base freshwater fish research museum, visitors feel like they are in the blue dream water world, watching the mysteries of various aquatic creatures in the underwater world. Chinese sturgeon, cochineal, salamander, jellyfish, leopard sharks, lice and other rare fish swim freely in the tank to feed.

Ms. Chen, who specially brought her children from Jiujiang to visit, told reporters that there are abundant fish species here, which is stronger than the relatively ordinary marine paradise of science popularity. "I just saw that there are activities on the theme of biodiversity conservation here, and the children have gained a lot through immersive tours."

China Porpoise Bay (Hukou) Yangtze River Poyang Lake Aquatic Biological Protection Base integrates biodiversity conservation, scientific research, education, ecological environment maintenance and cultural tourism and health care, the venue is divided into eight exhibition areas, including Yangtze River system overview area, Poyang Lake display area, freshwater exhibition tank area, marine display area, displaying more than 120 species and nearly 12000,<> (tail) biological and rare species specimens.

Since the trial operation of the museum opened on New Year's Day 2023, the base has received a total of 9,22 visitors (including free children), including 6,39 individual visitors, 0,88 group visitors, 1,64 research students, and 0,31 others.

On the eve of the International Day for Biological Diversity, an exchange activity on the theme of "Protecting the Common Home" for Chinese, French and Russian youth with the theme of "Biodiversity, Beauty and Harmony" was held here. Youth representatives from the three countries introduced their knowledge on biodiversity conservation and exchanged views on biodiversity conservation in their regions via video link.

"I am very happy to be able to exchange with children in France and Russia to increase my knowledge about aquatic animals, and I also feel that protecting biodiversity requires all of us to work together, starting from the small things around us." Zhou Siyi, a local middle school student who participated in the event, said.

In mid-February this year, Jiangxi Province carried out ex situ conservation of Yangtze finless porpoises in Poyang Lake, and two male Yangtze finless porpoises about 2 years old were relocated to their "new home" in the waters of Nanbei Port on the side of the base. With the continuous increase in the protection of the Yangtze finless porpoise, Jiangxi monitored 5 Yangtze finless porpoises last year, and the number of porpoises in Poyang Lake increased steadily.
