The opposition Tunisian Salvation Front demanded on Saturday the immediate release of all political detainees since mid-February, in what is known as the case of conspiracy against state security.

This came during a protest organized by the Salvation Front on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in Tunis.

During the sit-in, dozens of demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the release of the detainees, and others such as "national unity against the populist onslaught, down with the coup, a constitution of freedom and national dignity."

Front member Samira Chaouachi said, "Our message is clear in this stand, which is that we will not abandon those who were kidnapped and arrested for the sake of a word, because Tunisia accommodates everyone."

Chaouachi said – in a speech during the vigil – that the detainees are not conspirators and everyone knows that, but they were arrested for their political opinions and positions, so "we said and say that they are political prisoners."

Since February 11, Tunisia has witnessed a campaign of arrests that included politicians, media, activists, judges and businessmen, and President Kais Saied accused some of those arrested of "conspiring against state security and standing behind the crises of distributing goods and rising prices."

Saeed has repeatedly stressed the independence of judicial authorities, but the opposition accuses him of using the judiciary to prosecute those who reject exceptional measures that began to be imposed on July 25, 2021, creating a severe political crisis.
