【Commentary】The two-day 2023 Chinese American Society Annual Conference and Academic Symposium on "Sino-US Strategic Game and the Taiwan Issue" was held in Xiamen, Fujian Province from May 5 to 20. Nearly 21 experts and scholars from dozens of universities and research institutions, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Minmin University, Xiamen University and China Institute of International Studies, attended the meeting to conduct in-depth discussions on the current Sino-US relations and the situation in the Taiwan Strait.

Experts and scholars attending the meeting said that Sino-US relations are a decisive part of the great changes in the world unprecedented in a century, and the Taiwan issue has a bearing on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Against the backdrop of the United States' continuous strengthening of strategic competition with China, the settlement of the Taiwan issue faces an increasingly complex security environment.

As far as the United States is concerned, the inclusion of Taiwan in its Indo-Pacific strategy is an important part of its entire strategy towards China. All these are naked interference in our domestic politics, including interference in our national sovereignty, which we firmly oppose, so the Taiwan issue has actually become a focal issue in the Sino-US strategic game.

In the guest speech session, Liu Guoshen, director of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Peaceful Development of Cross-Strait Relations and distinguished professor of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of Xiamen University, proposed that we should uphold a historical, comprehensive and dialectical perspective, examine the Taiwan issue based on the international pattern, strengthen strategic concentration, maintain the rhythm of development, and implement the complete reunification of the motherland in our own development and progress.

We must stand on the people's yearning for a better life on both sides of the strait, and from such a height and foothold as the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, to think about how we should handle this issue gracefully and generously; we must adhere to principles and pay attention to strategy; this is true between the two sides of the strait, and the same is true between China and the United States in handling the Taiwan issue.

The seminar set up four parallel sub-forums, including Sino-US relations, the Taiwan issue, US foreign strategy, and US economy, society and culture, and the participating experts conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on various issues.

Li Peng, Dean of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of Xiamen University

The circle of American research scholars and the circle of our Taiwan research scholars have a certain intersection, but the intersection is not very deep, so it is actually rare to sit down and have such exchanges of face-to-face depth. I think it is actually very beneficial for us to grasp the current situation more accurately, and then grasp the pulse of the Taiwan Strait, and then predict the future development trend of the Taiwan issue and Sino-US relations.

It is understood that this seminar is sponsored by the Chinese American Society and jointly organized by the Institute of American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Institute of Taiwan Studies of Xiamen University, the Nanyang Institute/School of International Relations of Xiamen University, and the School of History and Cultural Heritage of Xiamen University.
