SVT Småland has previously reported that there are two versions of how Öland Zoo investigated the incident when trainee Niklas Pedersen ended up alone trapped with a tiger in 2017:

• Öland Zoos, which writes to the Swedish Work Environment Authority that they investigated the incident together with Niklas' school.

• The school, which in several emails to SVT states that they did not learn anything until after several years, and firmly denies that they participated in any investigation.

Ends without criticism – and without control

It was in March this year that the Swedish Work Environment Authority asked the zoo questions about the tiger incident – which they did not know about at all before, among others, SVT Småland reported on it last autumn.

After four weeks, the case has now been closed without criticism of Öland Zoo, despite the fact that the park has not been able to prove that they made the report they are obliged to make. Nor have they submitted the investigation of the incident that the authority explicitly asked for.

– We have assessed that the park's description of how the investigation was carried out was sufficient and that they now have procedures that prevent this from happening again, says Kristina Gavare.

Swedish Work Environment Authority: The tasks are new to us

The information that Niklas and his school reject the park's version was published almost a week before the Swedish Work Environment Authority closed the case. Yet the Swedish Work Environment Authority says they were not aware of them.

Do you believe in Öland Zoo's data?

"There was nothing in the employer's response that made us suspect that this would not be true. But I'll have to take it with me and see if we need to take any action now," says Kristina Gavare.

SVT Småland has on several occasions asked Öland Zoo for an interview, and to see the report and investigation that the park claims to have sent by regular mail but which has never been registered. Through their lawyer, Öland Zoo responds that they do not want to make any comments as long as the investigation into the fatal accident in August 2022 is still ongoing.
