Since the appearance of GPT Chat, artificial intelligence has become one of the most discussed topics. Between admiration and fear, users often have preconceived ideas about the mechanism behind this new technology. Professor in the field at Sorbonne University, Laurence Devillers deciphered his abilities at the microphone of Europe 1.

Artificial intelligence has been at the heart of all conversations for many months. The appearance of the conversational prototype Chat GPT had the effect of a bomb in the world. Whether it's to make conversation or ask for real information, millions of people around the world use it every day. Its abilities, by their power and precision, can even worry. Laurence Devillers, professor of artificial intelligence at Sorbonne University, explains to the microphone of Europe 1 that this supposed superiority is in fact an "illusion".

GPT chat, a "projection of human capabilities"

Artificial intelligence has the power to maintain a conversation like a human being, which creates an "illusion of intelligence" according to the professor. "This illusion of intelligence will manipulate us and this is where we must be very careful," she continues before explaining that the "machine is only copying" and has "no meaning on what it is doing". As a result, this technology does not have emotions since they are "projections of human capabilities".

It is her language skills that lead human beings to believe that she is smarter and even more emotional than she really is. Although Laurence Devillers admits that it is difficult for many to "make a difference", she confirms that the very system of artificial intelligence has no form of life: "There is no consciousness, there are no emotions, there are no intentions."

The professor took the opportunity to add that the manipulation triggered by various artificial intelligences has already begun, especially via social networks with the modified images. Lately, many fake photos have circulated on the internet, featuring public figures in incongruous situations. "Cooperation" with machines is therefore necessary and includes "education" to learn how to better approach this new technology.
