Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h00, May 09, 2023

Listen to the rest of the story told by historian Virginie Girod about "the first Vichy cop", René Bousquet. While Nazi Germany continues its macabre "final solution", René Bousquet negotiates the fate of the Jews in France to spare public opinion. While in 1943, the senior official was criticized for his laxity in the face of the resistance, he helped some, including François Mitterrand. After the war, he was one of 108 Vichy ministers and senior officials tried by the High Court of Justice. Unlike Pierre Laval, he escaped the death penalty. By resuming a "normal" life, René Bousquet inserted himself into anti-Gaullist left-wing circles and became closer to François Mitterrand. It is by the impulse of the historian and lawyer Serge Klarsfeld, in the early 90s, that justice plunges back into the troubled past of this deeply ambiguous man.

Topics covered: Vichy regime - Collaboration - Judgment - Purge - Nazi
