Schongau's midwives don't let it get them down so quickly: After the closure of the obstetrics department, they are caring for pregnant women in the western district as an association.

County – Within a very short time, in less than six weeks, Schongau's midwives have developed a concept on how they can continue to care for women during and after pregnancy in the western part of the county. Not that it was so easy, says midwife Birgit Schmid on behalf of her colleagues. "In the beginning, we were paralyzed, we had to sort ourselves out first and then a lot of different ideas." The shock was deep-seated, Melanie Holzmann affirms.

She tells of a very extreme insecurity among pregnant women. She had received many calls from women who were desperate, did not know who was taking care of them now, where they were to give birth. Above all, first-time mothers would have thought about long distances to the next obstetrics, when they had actually planned firmly with Schongau. "The women I met during my visits to the gynaecologist's offices were all bitterly disappointed. It was important to us that the women continue to be well cared for," says Holzmann, who, together with her nine colleagues, launched the "Hebammerei".

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

Hebammerei in the western district of Weilheim-Schongau: Except for the birth, all the usual services

Every member of the tried-and-tested midwifery team is involved in the new merger. So the women are all expecting familiar faces. With the exception of the birth, the midwives offer all services as before. This includes the care of pregnancy complaints as well as getting to know each other personally with regard to aftercare. Breastfeeding advice is also still possible, as is postpartum visits as usual. Women are also happy to be cared for in the home environment.

The Schongau midwives also offer birth preparation courses for women and couples. Here, the midwives move to the rooms of the Pfaffenwinkel-Realschule Schongau. Postnatal courses are also offered here. We are still looking for premises for the popular baby massage.

"We are already overwhelmed by the support of women."

"We'll have to see how it goes, it's all new territory for us," says Birgit Schmid. The delivery room as a central point of contact, the place where all information and organizational matters would have been bundled, is gone. And then there are the bureaucratic hurdles or the organization of premises, which cost time and nerves. Last but not least, the latest feedback from women is a ray of hope. "We are already overwhelmed by the support of women." Many calls are already coming in from pregnant women who absolutely want to be cared for by the Schongau midwifery team.
