Activists of the "Last Generation" spray a private plane on the BER airport grounds. Several people are arrested.

Berlin – Climate activists of the "Last Generation" continue to cause a stir in Berlin. Now the climate movement has sprayed an airplane with orange paint at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER). "While we take shorter showers and ride our bikes, the private jets continue to fly over our heads," one activist tweeted. To do this, she shared a photo of a sprayed plane.

According to the police, the environmental activists had gained unauthorized access to the airport site on Friday (5 May). Around 12.45 p.m., several people had invaded the grounds of the airport and sprayed a stationary private machine on the tarmac, it said.

"We have provisionally arrested several people," the federal police reported on Twitter, which was able to arrest the activists within 40 seconds, according to their own statements. There was no impact on air traffic. Now it is being investigated for damage to property and trespassing.

In the meantime, the State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation. A total of six people were taken into custody and two more people were taken to a hospital for medical treatment, a police spokeswoman said. The reasons for this are still unclear. Most recently, a climate activist received the harshest punishment of the "last generation" to date.

How the activists gained access to the site was explained by the "Last Generation" in a statement. Supporters had cut through a fence of the airport area with two wire pliers. Subsequently, "private jets were sprayed with orange paint on a large scale" to protest against the "excessive destruction of human livelihoods by the super-rich." According to police investigations, only one plane had been sprayed.

This was not the only protest action of the climate movement on Friday. Activists blocked several roads in the capital. With 270 emergency personnel, the police were on site to end protests. At the same time, the officials repeatedly pointed out to remain calm and not to intervene independently. In recent weeks, there have also been attacks by passers-by on the climate adhesives. Most recently, for example, a man pounced on an activist in Berlin. (kas/dpa)
