Everyone talks about peace in Sudan, but no one has been able to impose a starting point towards it, except for a fragile truces interspersed with violations all the time, so will America take a practical turn from the bloody developments in Sudan or wave the sanctions card to end the dispute peacefully?

In the context of developments in the US scene of the war in Sudan, US Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines stated during her testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee that the two parties to the conflict in Sudan are seeking external support, in the context of their bets on defeating the other.

US President Joe Biden announced an executive order expanding his administration's powers to issue sanctions against those responsible for threatening peace, security and stability in Sudan and undermining the country's democratic transition. The US president stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire, an end to military violence and unhindered humanitarian access.

For his part, the adviser to the former US envoy to Sudan, Cameron Hudson, said in his interview with the program "Beyond the News" (2023/5/4) that Biden's statement on Sudan is a positive move from the perspective of US policy.

It is an indicator of what US policy is and refers to the 2021 coup, as well as the exposure of supporters of the coup to Washington's sanctions, as well as those who are now destabilizing Sudan and undermining the political process that leads to future civilian rule.

He also pointed out that the US declaration goes back to the past and looks to the future, as it refers to the current fighting on the ground in Sudan, but it does not include sanctions on any party, but rather is the formulation of a new US legal tool that it may resort to use, and it may be just a tactic that shows America's seriousness in dealing with Sudanese affairs, but it does not include practical steps.

Bias for a specific component

On the other hand, journalist and editor-in-chief of the Sudanese newspaper Al-Ahdath Adel El-Baz said that the statement came in light of the developments now taking place in the land of Sudan, but focused on the events of 2021, considering that there is confusion in the American position, expecting it to be an American attempt to support the Rapid Support Forces because its position on the ground has become advanced.

He considered that the timing of the announcement is suspicious because it was issued 72 hours after the Sudanese issue was considered internal to turn into a threat to US national security, pointing out that America is aligned with a specific component in Sudan, which made the atmosphere tense and led to fueling the war.
