Museum educator Erica Rönnbäck at the local heritage area Hägnan in Luleå explains that the Walpurgis Day celebrations have their roots in an old Catholic saint's day, but that the celebration and the burning can have many different historical explanations.

"Spring fires have existed for many reasons, including to scare away witches and wild animals. At this time of year when you were going to release the domesticated animals, it was good to make sure that the wild animals did not get too close, says Erica Rönnbäck.

The Walpurgis Day celebrations at Hägnan in Luleå begin at 18 pm on Valrborgsmässoafton.
