A black Muslim man was violently arrested by police in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, for allegedly committing a traffic violation while driving with his wife and children.

According to a video clip documented by the wife, and published by the National Council of Muslim Canadians, on Wednesday, the police assaulted the man by throwing him to the ground, and then one of them put his knee pressing on his neck, amid his wife's pleas to stop it, explaining that his children are in the car.

"This excessive force could have led to much more tragic results. We've seen this happen before. We are legally helping the man and his family, who were deeply traumatized by the accident. We demand justice."

"The victim was pulled by the Edmonton police for allegedly driving at 47 km/h in an area where it is forbidden to exceed 30 km/h, and it was easy to determine that the victim was Muslim by his clothes," the council's statement said.

"The victim allegedly noticed that the police officer was troubled, so he requested the presence of a supervisor before presenting his driver's license and information, and then the officer violently pulled the victim out of the car and threw him into a controlled position, putting his knee on his neck," he said.

Edmonton Police issued a statement in response to the video posted by the National Council, saying it did not intend to open an investigation into the incident after reviewing the video documenting it.

The driver was arrested after repeatedly refusing to provide his license, insurance or personal information, with the officer warning him several times to arrest if he did not comply with his orders, according to Edmonton police.

Police alleged that the officer in charge and a second officer forcibly removed the man from the car after he refused an order to get out, and that they tried to pin him to the ground, while he tried to resist arrest and his failure to comply with their orders.

The police statement explained that the man received a mental health examination that showed that he was completely healthy, suffered an injury to his shoulder and asked to be transferred to the hospital, and was allowed to leave after speeding violations, failure to show his driver's license, registration and insurance.

Interactions and Canadian personalities – via social media platforms – expressed their condemnation of the attack, stressing that the police used excessive force in dealing with a simple situation, and calling for the rejection of Islamophobia.

The Canadian government's representative for combating Islamophobia, Amira al-Ghawabi, said: "These are very worrying footage. "It is painful to see anyone being violently treated by law enforcement."

This is very troubling footage; distressing to see anyone treated violently by law enforcement, including a Black Muslim man out with his family for Eid.

Ces images sont très troublantes et il est affligeant de voir toute personne traitée violemment par les forces de l'ordre, y... https://t.co/HNqZQhcinx

Canadian Senator Salma Atallah Jan wrote: "I am appalled to see Edmonton police officers treat a Canadian Muslim with such unnecessary force for committing a minor speeding offense in front of his wife and children. This is simply pure racism. All Canadians deserve to be treated fairly and to feel safe."
