Brussels, April 4 (ZXS) -- At a time when the situation in the Central African country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to be tense, the European Union announced on the 26th that it will provide more than 26 million euros in additional aid to the DRC to cope with the increasingly urgent humanitarian needs there.

According to the announcement issued by the European Commission on the same day, the EU will provide 3270.<> million euros of assistance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo through humanitarian partners, covering basic living needs such as nutrition, medical care, drinking water, personal hygiene, emergency shelter, and shelter, focusing on vulnerable people suffering from conflict in eastern DRC.

Including the 3.4570 million euros of aid announced by the EU in early March, the total amount of EU aid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the first four months of this year alone is close to 4 million euros, according to the announcement.

In addition, the EU, in cooperation with member states such as France, has opened a humanitarian "air corridor" to the eastern DRC; So far, 7 tons of aid have been delivered to the eastern DRC through seven flights.

Since March last year, the situation in eastern DRC has deteriorated, with frequent violent clashes and the displacement of millions of people. According to UNHCR, there are currently more than 3 million internally displaced people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the largest number of displaced countries in Africa, and about 600 million people have fled to neighbouring countries for refuge.

The EU announcement said that as the number of displaced people continues to increase, local humanitarian needs such as food, drinking water, medical care, and personal hygiene are becoming increasingly urgent; More than 25% of the DRC's population – about 2700 million people – is currently severely food insecure, and an estimated 280.<> million children are acutely malnourished.

At the end of March this year, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of the Congo told the Security Council that the humanitarian crisis of internally displaced persons in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was extremely dangerous and could not be ignored, and called for mobilizing more resources to implement this year's United Nations humanitarian emergency plan in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and raise about $3.22 billion needed for the plan.
