Five Israelis were injured, one seriously, in a vehicular accident on Monday at the popular Mahane Yehuda market in West Jerusalem.

The Israeli police confirmed the death of the perpetrator of the vehicular attack, a Palestinian from Beit Safafa, while Israel's Channel 12 reported that the perpetrator was shot dead by an armed man who happened to pass by.

Israeli police said preliminary investigations revealed that the ramm-rammed rammed a number of pedestrians before his car hit a wall.

Army Radio said the attacker was named as Hatem Najma, who had no security background but had a psychological record.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, which he described as an attempt to kill Israeli citizens, Palestinian factions considered that the vehicular attack comes in response to Israeli crimes against Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestinians.

Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Qanou said that the vehicular attack comes in response to the crimes of the occupation and its violation of the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the latest of which was the storming of the Bab al-Rahma chapel and cutting off its electricity.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said the operation comes within the framework of the ongoing response to the crimes of the occupation, the storming of the Bab al-Rahma chapel, the repeated incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, the harassment of Christians, and the violation of the sanctity of holy places.

Earlier in the day, Israeli settlers and police renewed their raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem after a 13-day ban.

The Israeli government stopped settler incursions into the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, fearing an escalation of tension in the area.
