The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said it is following up with the Israeli government the arrest of a Jordanian parliamentarian accused by Tel Aviv of trying to smuggle weapons through the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge in the Jordan Valley to Israel.

The ministry's official spokesman, Ambassador Sinan al-Majali, said that the ministry, in coordination with all concerned authorities, is following up the case of MP Imad al-Adwan, who was arrested by the Israeli authorities for investigation against the background of an operation "alleged smuggling of quantities of weapons and gold."

The Israeli army spokesman announced that an attempt to smuggle weapons from Jordan had been thwarted.

He said in a statement that joint forces from the army, the Shin Bet security service and the police managed last night to arrest three people who were riding in a car from Jordan in the northern Jordan Valley and were trying to infiltrate into Israel.

The hackers were found in possession of three bags containing dozens of different weapons and about 3 kilograms of gold, he said.

According to the statement, the Israeli army had monitored their movement inside Jordanian territory and suspected them, confirming their transfer to an interrogation center inside Israel after their arrest.
