Social media users' accounts are often stolen or hacked for various reasons, foremost of which are Facebook accounts. Below we review the best ways to recover your Facebook account if it is stolen.

How do you know if your Facebook account has been stolen?

It is possible that your Facebook account can be stolen without necessarily being kicked out of it, as sometimes the serializer uses your account for a while before kicking you out of it.

You can detect this if you notice a change in your email, phone number, or any of the contact information, and the hacker may only change your name, date of birth and personal information, so it is recommended to check it constantly.

If you notice that you've sent friend requests to people you don't know, or sent messages you didn't write yourself, know that your account is stolen.

You should also pay attention to any post published without your knowledge, and if the hacker is a professional, he will hide it from your diary and disable notifications, so you have to visit your account constantly to make sure that everything is fine.

How do you recover a stolen Facebook account?

Once you're sure your account has been stolen, you need to do one of the following:

1- Reset password from mobile phone or browser

First, open the Facebook app installed on your mobile phone. The sign-in page will appear if you've been kicked out of your account.

Then you have to click on the "Forgot your password?" option, which is located below the email entry field and the password field.

After you click on the "Forgot to set your password?" option, the password reset page will appear, and you will enter your phone number or email address in the field provided, and then click on "Search".

It is worth noting that if you do not assign a phone number to the account, you must enter your email address or name on Facebook, and it is certainly not recommended to use the name on Facebook.

After pressing the search button, your account will appear next to the contact information of the account, and all you have to do is choose the email or phone number to recover the account.

If you select Email, Facebook will send a verification code to your email where you have to go into your email and search for the message containing the verification code.

If you select a phone number, your mobile number will be sent a text message with the verification code for your Facebook account.

A page will automatically appear asking you to enter the verification code that you received in the Facebook application, and here you have to type it in its field and then click on "Next".

After that, you have to choose the "Sign out" option from all other devices, and then you have to type in a new password and then reconfirm it.

2. Report your account to Facebook

Resetting your password isn't the only way to recover a stolen Facebook account, there's another way too.

Where you can report a compromised account by entering the page for reporting any hack via this link.

Choose the "My Account is hacked" option, and then a search page will appear asking you to enter your email or phone number.

If you do not link your account to a specific phone number, you must adhere to the email option to search for your account and after typing one of them you have to press the "Search" button.

After completing the previous steps, a window will appear asking you to enter the last password you remember in the Current or old password field, and then click on Next.

After that, a list will appear with 5 options, which are the possible causes of hacking, the most important of which are:

  • I saw a message or post that I didn't create.
  • Someone accessed my account without my permission.
  • I don't see the right option on this list.

If you don't choose one of these three reasons and choose the others, you'll be taken to the Facebook Help pages.

But when you choose one of the three reasons, you will be taken to the recovery page of the compromised account after you click on the "Next" button, then the recovery start page will appear and you must press Start to analyze the previous activities on your account.

After that, a new window will appear; choose the "Next" button, then type a new password and confirm it again, then click on "Next", after that you will edit any posts that you did not write and then continue to the news feed page.

Ways to avoid and protect your account theft

There is no final solution and no guaranteed way to recover a stolen Facebook account – although the above methods are very useful in recovering the account – but the best way is prevention.

Two-factor authentication is one of the best prevention methods as it contributes significantly to mitigating hacks and account theft.

It can be activated by entering "Settings" and then "Security", logging in and then choosing "Use two-factor authentication", then choosing "Authenticate by text message" or through an authentication application and after you do one of them, choose Finish.

Also, one of the most common ways to steal accounts is malicious links through which accounts are hunted, as you should not enter any link without knowing its source and where it leads clearly and explicitly.

It's worth noting that the links you get from strangers and those who aren't in your circle of friends are often hacked.

It's also important to protect your Facebook account that you remove third-party apps that are connected to Facebook and that you don't use or have been using for a long time.

This can be done by entering "Settings", then "Apps and Websites", then "Apps logged in with a Facebook account", then delete the applications you want by clicking on the application, then going down to the bottom of the list and pressing the remove button.

You can also check active sessions to see which sign-in process occurred in your account and which devices and locations were signed in from.

It can be accessed through the settings, then security and login, and here the active sessions appear at the top of the screen, press View More, and then remove any session you did not do.
