Canada geese grazing and pooping on the lawns at beaches are a major problem during the summer. The poop is not only unpleasant to tread in, but spreads bacteria and affects water quality.

The cost of scaring away the Canada geese with a laser is SEK 50,000. A small amount, according to the chairman of the Culture and Recreation Committee, Nicklas Salmin.

"Every year, we spend a million kronor on sending out a team to clean the municipality's beaches of bird poop. This measure will save money," he said.

Perceives the laser as a threat

Green lasers are already used by farmers and at airports where birds are at risk of causing harm. The birds perceive the green light as a threat and instead choose another place where they can be undisturbed.

Norrtälje will be the country's first municipality to use laser pointers to remove Canada geese from bathing areas.

"We need to be creative," says Nicklas Salmin.
