After fasting for long hours, the body needs a healthy breakfast that contributes to maintaining weight and the integrity of the digestive system, especially for those who suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Here we offer a set of medical advice related to foods and drinks suitable for the health of fasting people during the days of the holy month, provided by Dr. Ayman Skalli in Turkey, and we add controls when eating them for patients with diabetes and high pressure, and details about licorice and tamarind drinks.

Suhoor Meal

It must contain saturated nutrients and vitamins that last for fasting periods so that the fasting person does not feel tired and in order to remain active, the most important of which are dates because they provide the body with energy, eggs because they contain protein, as well as complex carbohydrates because they contain fibers useful for the digestive system.

For dates, a diabetic should deduct from carbohydrate intake, and generally one date contains 20 calories. But you should stay away from sugary drinks.

For patients with high blood pressure, you should stay away from foods rich in sodium such as pickles, as they raise blood pressure and cause thirst.

Ayman Sakalli added that it should not be forgotten to drink enough water to avoid dehydration of the body during fasting, and to stay away from foods with many salts and spices.

Breakfast was good.

The meal that the fasting person is waiting for is preferred to include eating healthy snacks so that he does not feel full, and does not suffer from health problems, most notably poor digestion, and these healthy foods are as follows:

Dates

Dates come at the forefront of foods during Ramadan because they contain important elements for the body. However, it should be moderate in its treatment for diabetics, and it is sufficient for one date.

Soups

Soups are characterized as light and beloved foods for fasting people, and it is recommended to start them after dates to help the stomach digest, and give the body the necessary fluids, including lentil soup, mushrooms, vegetables, and oats.

For blood pressure patients, salt should be reduced or no salt added, and this applies even to healthy people.

Appetizers

The Ramadan table is decorated with a range of delicious appetizers and salads that make Iftar more attractive and delicious, but it varies according to countries, and it should contain salads, vegetables and snacks away from fats and fries as much as possible.

For pasta salads that contain bread, the diabetic should deduct them from his carbohydrate intake.

Main Course

The main course in Ramadan varies from one country to another, but it is preferable to contain all the nutrients of carbohydrates, protein and minerals, so that the body takes the benefit and fills the deficiency that it lost in fasting, and it is preferable that the meat be grilled or boiled for easy digestion, and eat vegetables cooked in a healthy way away from the large number of fats and pans that weigh on the stomach.

Reduce salt in food, and do not overdo carbohydrates to avoid high blood sugar.

Sweets

A diabetic patient is advised not to exceed only one piece of candy. Syrup prepared from an artificial sweetener can be added, for example, to kunafa instead of syrup made from white sugar.

Ramadan Drinks

The menu includes drinks that contain important vitamins and give a refreshing feeling after a long day of fasting, tamarind, berry juice, lemon, mint and fresh cocktails that are distinctive and beneficial to the body.

The juice of the diabetic patient should be sweetened with an artificial sweetener, such as aspartame or saccharin, so that drinking it does not lead to high blood sugar.

As for hibiscus, it has health risks for pregnant women, as there are data that it can stimulate her menstrual blood flow, which can lead to miscarriage. There are also questions about its safety for lactating women.

In addition, adding sugar to it has a clear harm, which is to increase the risk of tooth decay, and sugar has a potential role in obesity caused by exceeding the total calories a person takes.

Licorice syrup has side effects, including:

  • Raising blood pressure.
  • Lowering the level of potassium in the body.
  • Trouble.
  • In some cases paralysis.

Therefore, licorice is not suitable for heart patients and high blood pressure, and even for healthy people, drinking it in large quantities and over long periods may lead to these risks.

Also for pregnant women, licorice may induce miscarriage or premature birth, so pregnant women are advised to stay away from it. There is also not enough data on how safe it is for breastfeeding women, so it is recommended to avoid it.
