According to Zakharova, the Finnish authorities decided to say goodbye to the neutral status that the country had enjoyed for many years. Instead, Helsinki decided to turn Finland into a "springboard for containing Russia" in the north-western direction.

On April 4, Finland officially joined the North Atlantic Alliance.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Moscow will calmly make public when the right moment comes – what the Russian side will do in response to Finland's accession to NATO.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that Russia has already begun to develop retaliatory measures to stop possible threats due to Finland's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
