On Tuesday evening, the Sudanese capital is witnessing a series of meetings to discuss developments in the political process to reach a final agreement in order to sign it on April 6.

A source in the Forces of Freedom and Change - Central Council, told Anadolu Agency, preferring not to be named, that the heads of the forces under the banner of this alliance were invited to a meeting at the Umma Party House in the city of Omdurman (center) to reflect on the current political situation, and deal with the consequences of delaying the signing of the final agreement and alternative options if it is not signed.

The Central Council is the most prominent civilian force that signed the framework agreement with the ruling Military Sovereignty Council on December 5, 2022, in order to reach a final agreement that resolves the political crisis.

The parties to the "framework" agreed to sign the final agreement for the political process on April 6, after it was scheduled for the first of the same month.

The source said that the presidential palace in the capital Khartoum will also witness today a meeting of the drafting committee of the final political agreement to include the comments it received on the initial draft from the signatories to the framework agreement and experts.

He added that today's series of meetings will conclude with a meeting with the leaders of the civil forces that signed the framework agreement to approve their final position on the issues of the political agreement, and discuss developments in the political process and subsequent steps in the coming days.

Issues of the final political agreement include transitional justice, peace, security and military reform, the dismantling of the regime of deposed President Omar al-Bashir (1989-2019), and the issue of eastern Sudan.

The ongoing political process aims to resolve a crisis that has dragged on since October 25, 2021, when army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan imposed exceptional measures, including the dissolution of the Sovereignty Council and the transitional ministers, and the declaration of a state of emergency.

Prior to Burhan's exceptional measures, a transitional period began in Sudan on August 21, 2019, which was scheduled to end with elections in early 2024, during which power would be shared by the army, civilian forces, and armed movements that signed the Juba Peace Agreement with the government in 2020.
