Drive at 110km/h on the motorway instead of 130km/h? As part of the sobriety plan for companies, the Ministry of Energy Transition recommends that the French, especially employees on business trips, take their foot off the gas.

The Ministry of Energy Transition recommends driving at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h on the motorway. A recommendation for employees on business trips. Driving slower to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions, logic seems to be on the way. Except that it remains very complicated to measure and set up. What for? Because fuel consumption has not decreased in 2022.

Ecological argument

The government wanted to set an example last fall. The 60,000 vehicles used by public officials of the State, excluding the army, must respect the speed limit of 110 km / h. A limitation that reduces CO20 emissions by 25 to 2% and reduces fuel consumption by 17 to 23%, depending on the type of vehicle according to Ademe.

Economic and security argument

The impact on purchasing power can also convince companies, according to Stéphane Amant, head of the mobility division of the consulting firm Carbone 4. "Going from 130km/h to 110km/h is three euros to save every 100 kilometers. You make the calculations according to the size of the fleets and the distances traveled by the employees on the motorway, it's not a 'game changer' (editor's note: a revolution) but it's always positive," he told Europe 1.

Reducing its speed would save an average of 149 euros per household per year, according to a study by Asteres. The other major argument is that of road safety. The violence of a shock at 130 km/h is twice as important as for an impact at 110 km/h.
