New York police officers have been put on alert and the police remain ready to respond to any emergency if needed during former US President Donald Trump's court appearance on Tuesday evening, AFP reported.

The NYPD spokesman said police would ensure that everyone could exercise their right peacefully, adding that there were currently no credible threats.

Reuters reported that the NYPD placed metal barriers around Trump Tower and blocked roads around the Manhattan Criminal Court, where the former US president will face charges, chief among them buying the silence of a actress in 2016, the first former or current US president to face criminal charges.

Trump has called the judicial investigation a political witchcraft, while his supporters, including Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor, have announced they will travel to New York next Tuesday to protest in Manhattan District Court.

Criminal charge

The Associated Press, citing sources familiar with the matter, said President Trump faces at least one criminal charge in the indictment confirmed by a jury in Manhattan.

The former president faces multiple other charges of falsifying business records, which will also be revealed on Tuesday.

Trump is expected to be read out the indictment, fingerprints and a photo of him taken as is the procedure against any defendant, but he will not be shackled.

Trump's lawyer, Joe Takubina, said his client faces political persecution in the New York case, and the lawyer added, in an interview with the American network "ABC", that he looks forward to acquitting his client as soon as possible.

Bloomberg quoted a source familiar with the matter as saying that Trump's legal team fears the former Republican president will not receive a fair trial in Manhattan, New York.

The same source explained that the legal team is considering a request to move the case from Manhattan to another location.
