Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202315h49, April 03, 2023

INTERVIEW - At a time when tensions are escalating between the Greeks and the British, historian Virginie Girod receives archaeologist François Queyrel. Since its independence in 1821, Greece has asked the United Kingdom to return the Parthenon friezes, which are exhibited and preserved in the British Museum in London. Despite the disagreements, the British government does not want to return its friezes. And yet, according to a 2021 YouGov poll, 55% of Britons were in favour of returning the Parthenon friezes and statues to Greek lands. For François Queyrel "The demand for restitution is obvious to the Greeks: the Parthenon represents the prosperous period of the history of Greece". But what is the history of this building? How did it fall into the hands of the British? What are the arguments of the two countries to demonstrate their legitimacy? Elements of answer in the interview of Friday dedicated to the restitution of the Parthenon. "Au cœur de l'Histoire" is a Europe 1 Studio production.

Topics covered: Greece - British Museum - United Kingdom - Parthenon - Friesland - Archaeology - Restitution - Ancient Greece
