Radon is a radioactive gas that is naturally present in the ground, it comes into being when radium decays. The gas is both invisible and odorless and can therefore only be detected by measuring various kinds.

Measure every ten years

According to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, a radon measurement should be carried out every ten years.

– But if you rebuild or change ventilation, you need to make a new measurement, says Elias Flink, radon manager at Eskilstuna Ventilationsrensning AB.

The limit value for radon is 200 becquerels in Sweden.

Elevated levels

In gravel ridges, high levels of ground radon are common. In Eskilstuna municipality, it is found in areas such as Hällby, Kvicksund and Höllta.

"It doesn't mean that you have more radon in the houses for that, because it has to do with ventilation and building construction," says Elias Flink.

He explains that radon is found in all types of buildings, but that there are often higher levels in basements or houses built of blue concrete.
