The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that the Syrian regime's Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad intends to visit Cairo on Saturday.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the official news agency, that Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will hold talks tomorrow (Saturday) at the ministry's headquarters in Cairo with Miqdad, without further details.
The Syrian regime did not release details about the visit.
Shoukry had previously met with Mekdad in September 2021 in New York, in the first meeting between the ministers of the two countries in 10 years.
But the expected visit is the first at the level of the Syrian regime's foreign minister to Egypt since the Arab League suspended Syria's membership in November 2011 against the backdrop of the regime's "repression" of popular protests against it.
The visit comes about a month after Egypt's foreign minister visited Syria and Turkey on February 27 in solidarity with them against the backdrop of the devastating earthquake that struck them on February 6, for the first time since 2011.
