The major industrial investments in Norrbotten mean that there is great interest in hydrogen in northern Sweden and Finland. At Luleå University of Technology, lots of projects are underway to find ways to produce hydrogen and how it can be used.

Want to find new fuels

Io Antonopoulou, a researcher at LTU, and her colleagues are currently testing how carbon dioxide can be reused to produce hydrogen.

"Our society has a strong need to abandon fossil fuels. We need to find alternatives. Through technology, we can use carbon dioxide that is trapped in plants or emitted from industries and turn it into chemicals or into fuel carriers such as hydrogen.
