The man in his 30s started his employment in Lund in early 2022. At first, everything worked well, but in the fall, colleagues and superiors noticed behavioral changes, he arrived late and had a lot of absences.

The occupational health services were involved and his manager had many conversations with him. He describes the explanations given by the surgeon for the changed behavior as credible and deserving.

Last November, police found 176 grams of heroin at his and his girlfriend's home after being called there about an apartment brawl.

"When you have the whole picture, it gives room for thoughtfulness," says Mikael Ekelund, section manager in surgery at Skåne University Hospital in Lund.

Not affected care

After the surgeon was arrested by police and charged, the hospital has gone through his patient cases and medical records. On this basis, it has been established that the surgeon's abuse has not affected the care provided.

"It feels good, but it damages trust in the healthcare system and creates concern among employees, patients and the general public," says Mikael Ekelund.

A doctor's license is examined

After the police intervention, the hospital routinely prepared a report to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate. They are now investigating whether the doctor's license should be revoked.

"If you read the preliminary investigation, it is clear that the person concerned should not have his or her id," says Mikael Ekelund.

The trial in Lund District Court, where the surgeon is charged with serious drug offenses, was held this week and a verdict is expected on Monday. The surgeon confesses to the crime.
