A man in his 50s, cohabiting with Nathalie's mother, was sentenced to life in prison for murder by the district court. Today came the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which assessed the crime as particularly serious assault and reduced the sentence.

"I didn't think it was true," Nathalie says.

"Blow to all women who are victims of violence"

The Court of Appeal writes in its judgment that it is not beyond a reasonable doubt that it was the 50-year-old man's use of force that caused the woman's death. Therefore, the Court of Appeal sentences the man instead of particularly aggravated assault.

"It's a blow to all women who are victims of violence," says Nathalie.

The prosecution has argued that the woman died as a result of her brain injuries, but the Court of Appeal believes that the evidence opens the door to the conclusion that the woman may have died from drug poisoning.

The ruling also means that relatives of Jeanette are also not entitled to damages, as the man is not judged to have caused her death.
