At least 20 people have died and several others were injured in Saudi Arabia after a bus crash carrying pilgrims from Umrah, a type of Islamic pilgrimage held within the country, on Aqabat Shaar Road in the southwestern Asir region.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon after a failure in the brakes of the bus that caused it to hit a bridge, according to local media. After the crash, the vehicle overturned and caught fire, trapping the passengers inside.

The accident occurred during the first week of Ramadan, when worshippers fast from dawn to dusk. Many people travel to enjoy evening parties with family and friends during the Muslim holy month.

Civil Defence and Red Crescent teams transferred several hospitals in the Asir region. Authorities are clearing the road to resume vehicular circulation.
