• Castellón The fire is still not controlled by its "great voracity"
  • Research The "human factor", probable cause of the fire that has already burned 4,000 hectares

The fire that since Thursday is still active and out of control in the interior of Castellón and Teruel faces this Sunday a decisive day, with the weather as the main "inconvenience" to stop the advance of the flames, as recognized early in the morning by the regional secretary of Emergencies, José María Ángel.

In fact, and despite the fact that the 700 troops who are working on the ground to put out the flames have been able to contain the perimeter in the 40 kilometers, the fire has been complicated this Sunday in the Maimona ravine. It is an area of very difficult access in which terrestrial means have no way to enter. Therefore, Angel has confirmed that the Generalitat has requested the incorporation of more air means.

In the Advanced Command Post located in Barracas (Castellón), the concern focuses this Sunday on the reproduction of the fire in this ravine. According to the latest update of Emergencies of the Generalitat, the flames – which originated on Thursday in the Castellón municipality of Villanueva de Viver – have razed 4,000 hectares.

The fire has also destroyed a small inhabited village in the Teruel municipality of San Agustín, while the 1,500 residents evicted from their homes are still unable to return to them and remain in shelters. In total, eight municipalities in the province of Castellón have been evacuated, without the authorities having yet confirmed when the neighbors will be able to return.

"Meteorology today is not an ally but an inconvenience," warned José María Ángel. The forecast points to a westerly wind, with gusts of between 50 and 60 km / hour and high temperatures. "At any time a reproduction can occur and you have to be very attentive to the evolution", very conditioned by the weather, said Ángel.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts that in the area of the fire wind blows today from the northwest, notably drier than the southern breeze that has been blowing in recent hours, and a humidity of less than 30%. The forecast is therefore that the weather conditions are very adverse, since the wind will turn to the northwest from the morning and intensify.
